Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana from Ranchi in Jharkhand on 23rd September. It is a game-changer initiative to serve the poor.
This is the world’s largest government funded health care program targeting more than 50 crore beneficiaries.
Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana
The Ayushman Bharat is a scheme that aims to provide health assurance to 10 crore families or around 50 crore Indians, who will be given up to Rs 5 lakh cover per year.
The scheme targets the poor, deprived rural families and identifies an occupational category of urban workers’ families, 8.03 crore in rural and 2.33 crore in urban areas, as per the latest Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data.
The health ministry has included 1,354 packages in the scheme under which treatment for coronary bypass, knee replacements and stenting among others would be provided at 15-20 per cent cheaper rates than the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).
About the scheme
Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana is the world’s largest fully government-financed health protection scheme.
The number of beneficiaries of this scheme is equal to the total population of the entire the European Union.
The number of beneficiaries is almost equal to the population of Canada, Mexico and the US taken together.
Benefits of the Scheme
Under this scheme, over 10 crore families will be provided health assurance worth five lakh rupees each, every year.
In the days to come, people working in the medical field will come up with new schemes based on this health cover that has been provided today.
The scheme will provide cashless and paperless access to services for the beneficiary at the point of service.
Magnitude of the scheme could be gauged from the fact that more than 1,300 ailments are covered under it, including heart diseases, kidney and liver disorders and diabetes.
Under the scheme, the beneficiaries will be able to move across borders and access services across the country through the provider network seamlessly.
The services will include 1350 procedures covering pre and post hospitalization, diagnostics and medicines.
How it works
Ayushman scheme is not based on any communal or caste lines. No one needs to register for the initiative.
A health card would be provided to the beneficiaries for availing of the benefits.
A toll-free number will also be made available to the people for finding out more about the scheme.
2,500 modern hospitals would come up in tier-II and tier-III cities and would generate employment opportunities.
A total of 13,000 hospitals have become a part of the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
He also laid foundations stones of two medical colleges at Chaibasa and Koderma.
Mr Modi also inaugurated ten Health and Wellness Centres in the state.
Objectives of the scheme
The objectives of the Yojana are to reduce out of pocket hospitalisation expenses, fulfill unmet needs and improve access of identified families to quality inpatient care and day care surgeries.
This scheme will be paperless, cashless & portable.
The country will soon have 1.5 lakh wellness centers.
